Gameplay is largely the same as they're both flight simulators set in WWII, CLoD has arguably better flight models but I don't think they're so good to be worth the hassle, and it's hard to compare since many aircraft aren't in IL2 BoX. CLoD offers some interesting things but at the cost of many modern simplicities. Generally in my experience CLoD is for the older simmers who don't mind dealing UI straight out of 2001 as they played IL2 1946, CLoD and BMS back in the day.
